My situation lead me to explore alternative therapies and gave me an opportunity to experience some treatments which most people may overlook. Things like acupuncture, electrical stimulation, meditation, breathing exercises, natural therapies including vitamins and supplements and finally hyperbaric oxygen therapy.
Generally these treatments are deemed "unproven" but as I read stories of other peoples journeys, I realized this was about doing the one per-centers which as a whole would benefit me.
I believe all of these therapies have their place in healing and Im still actively taking vitamin supplements (for energy, muscle recovery, joint pain and general health), getting needled from time to time, use breathing techniques and just this week had the muscle stimulator on my leg to promote blood flow and healing.
The two weeks I spent in rehab hospital gave me a chilling perspective of what could have been had I hit the pole differently. I remember laying there unable to move my arm yet looking around their were people my age in wheelchairs and of course some that were never going to get out of bed. That changed my perspective on life.
I guess there was a sense of urgency to accomplish as much as possible while I had the opportunity. This was the first time I wrote a list of some thirty things I wanted to achieve or improve on in my life. Number one was to get my black belt. It was a huge milestone that I'd been aiming for for sometime and I was to close to let that slip from my grasp. Some of the other goals that I can recall were, further my education, be top of my class, find employment earning more than what I would had I just remained an electrician and travel the world.
There were also little goals which sometimes get forgotten or taken for granted like call my mum once a week, be a better brother and friend and try to help those in need.
I put the list were I would see it everyday and found that it was a constant reminder not to take life for granted. Anyone can do this simple task and it really does keep you focused because the goal is constantly on your mind, you will naturally put the wheels in motion to see it through.
Funnily enough I wrote a simple little note on my alarm before the world championships. It read "Get up and win gold" so every morning it gave me the motivation not to hit the snooze button making sure I went to the gym.
