The second week back from hiatus is always harder than the first. The first week my entire body is fresh, flexible and mobile. After that all my muscles begin tightening up, start aching and I get what is termed heavy legs. In other words I feel like I have concrete legs and they move at half the pace that they usually would.
All this is temporary though and I know that in another few weeks my body will settle down into a rhythm were I can start building my strength and endurance.
Carlos pre season training program stepped up a notch this week with our goal of building cardio fitness and mental strength. That means high intensity and high volume kicking with little recovery time in between. The exercises and combinations vary though they are all based on percentage shots. Back foot round house, running kick, slide out counter and turn back kicks. We finished the sessions with a bag routine involving front kicks, roundhouse kicks and cut kicks, and by this stage I personally felt like throwing up (though have not done so yet).
Yesterday the athlete class was invited to be the first to train at our brand new club in Airport West. New paint, new mats and a fresh new feel added to the excitement. I was expecting the hall to be slightly larger though it is by no means small in comparison to some of the other clubs.
Being just off the Tullamarine freeway means its easy to get to so Im looking forward to doing some regular training here. This is good news because it creates the opportunity for new members to start up and with luck we may get some strong eager fighters. From a personal perspective that means more people to train with which will hopefully push all the athletes to a higher level.
