Its been a long two weeks for me. I've been inundated with work, attempting to finalize all my jobs before I go on holidays.
Its the same old story every time I take holidays that because I feel responsible for the jobs Im running that i feel obligated to finish them before I leave.
I'm absolutely exhausted and am so relieved now to be heading to Canberra tomorrow.
Nationals has officially begun!
Even though Im going as a spectator, all the hard work leading up to this moment makes my time off all the more special. When I work hard for something it makes the reward all the more satisfying.
This will be my first nationals which I can relax, not stress about who Im competing against and can sit back and enjoy it for everything it is. As a spectator and a lover of Taekwondo Im really looking forward to it.
While Im not competing, I still think this is an opportunity to further myself in Taekwondo. I recall a conversation I had with triple Olympian Alex from Greece at the world championships.
For him, and I guess most Olympians, it is a full time job were they will spend at least 30-40 hours doing some sort of training. As I listened and learnt, training is not just about the physical, its just as much about the physiological and about preparation. He explained that as part of his training he would watch video footage on youtube of the elite competitors in his division. And in doing so is able to pick one or two strengths and weakness of his opponents. I guess at that level every little bit counts.
In saying that, Carlo believes in a different approach. His is just as valid in that when you compete you fight your fight. In other words you make your opponent fight your style and hence you do not need to be concerned about learning the strengths and weaknesses of all your opponents. In other words you can solely concentrate on what techniques you are best at and let them adjust to you.
Because I cant do the latter Im resigned into eagerly watching my division and learning a little from everyone.
Good luck to everyone this weekend and enjoy.

See you there,

Steve
